In many Indian communities it is customary for the bridegroom, accompanied by his celebrating family members and friends, to travel to the bride's house, hotel, or other meeting point, on a white horse. This procession is called a Baraat. The Baraat can feature dholak (a north Indian hand drum) or melam ( musical instruments that are unique to Kerala south India), a mela baja band (a band made up of brass instruments), dancers, celebrants, and sometimes even fireworks.

The white Indian wedding horse is traditionally decorated with red and gold embroidered cloth to complement the turban, achkan (a long-sleeved coat-like garment, worn close to the body, reaching down to the knees or even lower, and buttoned in front-middle), jootis (footwear), and churidar (tightly fitting trousers worn by both men and women in South Asia and Central Asia). Often the horse, or carriage, carries a large lavishly decorated umbrella to ward off evil spirits. The Indian bridegroom transported to his wedding in this fashion displays his power, community standing, and wealth to all involved in the celebration.
